Untold Stories about Guan Eng

Untold Story about Guan Eng

I had written 2 paragraphs about my visit to Guan Eng when he was serving his sentence in Kajang Prison. I made that visit in October 1998 together with Chong Siew Chiang.I had merely written that during that visit in Kajang Prison, Chong Siew Chiang and I had a heart to heart talk with Guan Eng for 1 hr. 45 minutes in respect of his legal case which had cost him his freedom, political office, professional career, pension and much else besides.

I had said that it was a sad but eventful meeting. I was economical in my words.

There is one aspect of my visit to Guan Eng that day that I did not write about. Actually, I could not write about it, because it was so, so humiliating and sad. I did not write about it because Kit Siang did not want me to see it. But I did see what Kit Siang desperately tried to let me not see it.

Kit Siang was supposed to drive us to Kajang Prison. He was busy that morning and our departure from our HQ was delayed a little. Kit Siang was speeding like nobody’s business. When we arrived at the Prison, we “checked” in at the office. It was at this time that I saw the prisoners walking out in their prison uniform for row calls at the wardens’ office. They had to squat in rows, every time and every day that they did so, and the prison wardens would call their numbers.

As I walked in, I saw the familiar face of a prisoner with an unfamiliar crew hair cut. He was squatting at the front row. Both his hands were placed over the back of his head …

We had a split second eye contact but I pretended not to see … It was very dissimilar to those other cases when I was required to visit the prison as a lawyer.

Half an hour later, we met. Kit Siang did not join us. I would not know where he had gone to. Guan Eng started by saying that he wanted me to send a message to Party members and supporters in Sarawak not to despair over his fate. “Tell them that they can break my back, but they cannot break my soul.”

As we discussed his case, I knew that he was not well at all. He was pale and complained of body pain. He also complained that he had not consumed sufficient salt, the food being tasteless. We were worried that his fragile body won’t take him through. We were concerned about his safety in there. He assured us that the inmates there had treated him alright, that they all knew that he was wronged.

It was unbelievable that even when he was at the pit of his life, he had his heart for the Party members, in our case, the comrades in Sarawak.

We told him our view about the legal case. It was clear to us that he was fated to sit behind bars for another 10 months. He knew as much. Royal pardon was out of question.

As Kit Siang drove us away from the Kajang Prison, he made sure that we had a taste of the signature food of Kajang town – satay. At the coffee shop, Kit Siang greeted the town folks who wished him well and to remain strong, but in his leaner body frame, I saw the pains that he had endured. Political adversaries had long accused him of cronyism and nepotism, and the building of a Lim dynasty. The fate of his son losing everything after standing up for a Malay girl who was raped by a Chief Minister, and having to languish in jail for 18 months, showed the cruelty and venom of those accusations.

Siew Chiang was habouring many questions inside his chest and it took a long time for him to break his silence. He asked Kit Siang why he was speeding desperately this morning. Kit Siang then told us. He wanted to make it to the Prison before the row call. If we had made it in time, our meeting could begin, and Guan Eng would not have to take part in the row call. During the row calls, the prisoner had to squat in a row, hands behind the head … As the father, Kit Siang did not want us to see his son in that moment of ultimate humiliation.

Siew Chiang told Kit Siang that he did not see Guan Eng in the row. I said I did not also. Then Kit Siang told us where Guan Eng was squatted. He sped, because he had not wanted us to see the ultimate humiliation to his son.

But I had sinned with my eyes.

The signature satay was tasteless to me amidst cries of injustice that innocent people had to suffer.

On our way home, there was hardly any communication between us. Our hearts were heavier than lead. In my mind, I saw the flashes of a prisoner, hands behind his head, his face so familiar, squatting in the row like other inmates. I repeatedly asked myself whether Guan Eng deserved this. Why should I see that moment in his life when his father had wanted me not to? But that was what it was, for Guan Eng had to endure that humiliation for 365 days.

It was after midnight in Kuching not long after Guan Eng’s release. We had finished our party function and all were hungry for supper. We found a little place in order to replenish our tummies. There was no food left except plain porridge. I ordered some, teasing Guan Eng that the porridge must be better than what he was used to in Kajang. Guan Eng cursed me for reminding him of what he had gone through.

That day about 2 weeks ago, when I stood for photograph with YAB Lim Guan Eng behind his Chief Minister’s desk in Penang, I recalled what I had seen of this man. From a humiliated prisoner, he had been vindicated by the powers in the people’s hands.

Much that YAB Lim had never responded to anything I said about his less than glamorous times behind bars, he will always remember the ultimate humiliation that a person had gone through. He will know the true meaning of justice.

In less than 10 years, God has shown YAB Lim Guan Eng the way. May YAB Lim now shower mercy and love to the great people of Penang.

    Thank you for opening the comment box. When I said the Barisan Nasional is asking Saudara Lim Guan Eng to forgive them, it is not so much as in spoken words. It is the action. Meaning he won the elections. Who is your wildest thought would see this day when a DAPper becomes a Chief Minister and other DAPperS becoming the exco; beside the usual Parliamentarian ? That is why they call it the tsunami.

    So this is a start not to allow overwhelming majority of the Barisan Nasional. Too much has happenned. Altantuya. Lingam. Chua Soi Lek. Stories that came out to tell us that this Barisan Nasional is not perfect.

    We have a comparison to make. A Chief Minister in Penang who has gone through a lot and a Chief Minister in Sarawak who is spoiled by every means. Oh ! Another one in Terengganu.

  2. anonymous Says:

    Mr. Wong Ho Leng, do you yourself see a day when so many DAPpers would be voted in regardless whether they are in the West or East Malaysia ?

  3. Wong Ho Leng Says:

    Anon, that will take a while yet. The anti-West sentiments are a bit too strong as of now. But I hope to see full integration in time to come, and in fact, this possibility is opening up fast, if Sarawakians know what to do. We have single handedly given Abdullah the BN Govt. if Sarawakians through their “politicians” should demand for better treatment now, that is now.

  4. Kelvin Says:

    I feel so sorry for YAB Lim’s past suffering, but proud of him and extremely touch of every moment recorded during your prison visit to YAB. He is a man deserves respect of the wider community.

  5. Pysong Says:

    Jailed by simply injustice of those corrupted power, what touched me most, and the only thing I remembered after bro. Guan Eng was released from prison was the title of his statement to all: “Malaysia deserved better”.
    And since then I know this man truly deserved a better place than any other ordinary politician from BN.

  6. chris anthony Says:

    Every moment of his humiliation and suffering had made him a man he is today - simple,with full of humility and devoid of the racist feelings in his heart.

    His magnanimity of treating his predecessor,Koh Tsu Koon,his willingness to join in the celebrations in the mosque and being approachable to the masses all arise from the character that was molded in the prison.

    It is not easy to accept punishment for defending truth,especially when the truth involves the poor and downtrodden like the poor girl of a different race.

  7. voter Says:

    We must not forget about Anwar as well. Taken to jail, then showed up in court as a panda, jailed, freed,….. ,accused of being irrelevant but shown to be so relevant on 8th March. What is going to be next? There must be a long future history waiting for us to see

  8. passingby Says:

    Each time Barisan Nasional is not happy, each time they throw somebody into the jail. And this is call justice. Is Tun Mahathir qualified to tell people how to be a leader ? Or is this just cakap tak serupa bikin ?

  9. carmen Says:

    dear YB Wong,

    Thanks for the sharing. it is good to let all of us know of the suffer which YAB Lim has gone through.

    Besides, i wish so much that this writing be forwarded to all the DAP elected Representatives. We got to ” teach” some of those DAP Politician who are not mature, who are short-sighted, who tend to be political jumping frog to be thankful to what they have right now.

    Without DAP, they are no one and, after being elected, their main task is to serve the people!serve the nation but not serving for their own selves!

    again….great write-up………..

    all the best..

  10. WH Yap Says:

    Thank you for sharing this powerful story of triumph over injustice in our country. Guan Eng deserves his place and you as well.

  11. Kheng Lee Says:

    Touching story. As a former Malaysian lawyer who once volunteered - visiting prisoners (petty criminals) in Pudu jail, KL - the sight you saw is all true.

    For me, as an ex-Malaysian now, I hope Eng Guan with that experience will become a statesman, and bring his party to greater heights, and contribute to the people who helped put him there like never before, and not repeat what repeatedly happened in history - “corrupted by power”. I wish Eng Guan all the very best, and as an ex-Penangnite, I am very proud of him.

    History will tell whether, he goes on to become a Great Statesman or a mere politician - only time will tell.

  12. RKPG Says:

    Thanks for sharing. Touching Story….GOD shown his way to YAB Lim …furthermore sure will bless him all the time …GOD Bless you all….Human Doing , God Seeing……

  13. M. Tneoh Says:

    Indeed he is like Joseph in the Old Testament who had been humiliated and later brought to the second highest position after Pharoah in Egypt. If he had suffered so much, I am sure he will be a good leader. We will remember him in our prayers. May he excel in his present position and bring the BN folks to shame.
    Be strong and continue your good work. I am sure all Malaysians will be proud of you YB.

  15. Sandy Lim Says:

    A very touching story. I hope the younger generation will follow his footstep. He has good leadership quality, that we cannot deny, not forgetting his father kit siang who has been fighting and debating all these years in the parliment being humiliated with abusive words from the uneduacted nerks. Bravo to both the father and son team. May god bless them.

    Just as chinese saying, “God will let us gone through the pain & suffering before assign the Significant Task to someone.” YAB Lim Guan Eng had gone through all those, and now is the time for him to realizes Ideal Political Path.

    As a Penang Kia, I am proud with him.

    ^_^ Ganbatte!!!! All the Best ^_^

  19. Saera Says:

    He is a remarkable man and we wait to see if wisdom from the experience translates into good practice. I also feel sad about the other prisoners squatting alongside Guan Eng. It is humiliating for them too and who knows how many were also undeservedly imprisoned and humiliated. I sincerely hope that treatment of prisoners will be on Guan Eng’s agenda. In particular I hope he will champion the causes of the parents and relatives of prisoners who have died in police custody. At least to give the parents the satisfaction of knowing that everything has been done to explain the causes of death. They can then be at peace with their loss. We, as citizens will see justice being done. BKK

  20. BravoEagleHotel Says:

    A touching and good blog .
    Guan Eng as he preferred to be called, Perhaps it is God willed that led to your defending the young Malaysian and your wrongful conviction.
    Guess all that led to you what you are today …. A Malaysian with a heart for all Malaysians! Wonder how many in the oppositions in Penang can bravely says that. Let me together with my family wish you all the best in your undertakings …

  21. Adeline Says:

    It’s a greatest gift from God that we Penangites could have such a just leader. YAB LIM, I just want to assure you that I’ll commit my support and respect to you as long as I live. Just do your best for justice. Even if you could’t achieve the best for us, it’s not your fault but we truly understand the darkness of Malaysia’s politic. YOU & YOUR DAD ARE OUR HEROES!! MAY GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR FAMILY.

  22. Gan Says:

    My heart cries for LKS & LGE for all the injustices that has been inflicted on father and son, as well as their families.

    And I curse all those who belittles their struggle as Empire building for the Lim dynasty. A low down blow …

    Thank God for showering his blessings on both father & son to see that at last justice has prevailed for the deserving. I hope he continues to watch over them and keep them safe.

    YB lim,

    I am very proud of you and you will be agood leader. The humiliation that you had gone through,I am sure will be an asset to you and I wish you will prosper as a Cm and may future leader at federal level. May god bless you.

  24. aditia Says:

    he gained respects from all walks of life through his numerous baptism of fires and he certainly is the best person to lead penang out of the doldrums but he still has a long way to go.well, a million miles journey begins with a single step.
    cheers.

  25. John Says:

    I am a Sabahan. I cried when I saw him sworn in as Penang CM.

    All of us wish him well. We all love you Guan Eng.

  26. Dickson Dollah Says:

    Dear Wong Ho Leng,

    Have you ever heard of a saying - God works in a mysterious way? YAB LGE deserves where he is now! He has suffered a lot and now after the tsunami of GE-12, may God sinks BN and particularly UMNO from now on. We believe Sarawak will be hit by this tsunami even worst comes next state election. Yes Wong Ho Leng, lets work hard to achieve it from now.

  27. bigben Says:

    Thanks for enlightening us. I have always had great respect for Kit Siang for his forsight and conviction for his believes. He should be given more credit then he deserves. Now after reading this article, I feel that these men will be remembered in history as great men. People like Dr. M nesia will go down in history as the most hated, crooked and wicked PM.

  28. Kenny Wong Says:

    Both father and son are well known for their fighting spirit in addressing injustice anywhere in Malaysia. It was most unfortunate that YAB Lim GE was the one who has to go to jail for doing his part in helping the poor and defendless. LGE fought so hard to get case upheld in court, but unfortunately the parents of the girl let him down. When the parents apologized to LGE, he had to accept it with a heavy heart. LGE has to pay the price for unseen hands in changing the course of justice. We should salute LGE for what he had gone through and it should remain in the hearts and minds of every Malaysians that we are proud to know that he stands tall among all the great sons of Malaysia. He will gain greater stature and prominence if he shines in his new job as CM of Penang.

  29. Mr Smith Says:

    Wong,
    I thank you for this great story. Each time I recall Guan Eng’s unfair incarceration, I will curse the Government, Mahathir, Eusoff Chin, that AG ( I won’t mention his name cos it stinks) who is probably in hell today and the Judiciary.
    I have personally known Kit since 1982. I have read most of his books, some of which he gave to me with his autograph. I still treasure those books.
    I had also spoken to Guan Eng but he had an air, unlike his father. But that was before his imprisonment.
    I have an 87 year old mother-in-law who admires Kit more than any other human being on earth!!! Would you believe that?
    Kit and his son had sacrificed so much for this nation. They have been vindicated by no other than the Almighty.
    We should never forget the pain Mrs Lim Kit Siang had gone through all these years. When her husband and son were under ISA, she must have endured much pain. May God Bless her.
    Let us pray for this great Lim family. I hope more will be written about this great family.
    I have voted in eight General Elections and all my votes went to the DAP. Need I say why?

  30. Texas168 Says:

    Truth and Justice will prevail even if it takes a generation. And while man intended it for evil, God has other plans. Through Guan Eng’s incarceration at Kamunting, he met Betty and they got married. Through his ordeal at Kajang, he is much better prepared to be a great leader for Penang and Malaysia.

  31. I Malaysian Says:

    As I read through your writing I could feel the pain of a friend , a father and above all a humanity of fellow human on the injustice caused on another. It is so unfortunate that being a Muslim country ruled by muslim leaders who perceived to be religious and upright are capable of doing the most inhumane to fellow citizens in this country.

  32. Hasnah Says:

    The malays did not forget what Guan Eng went through. Despite Mathahir’s insistence that Melayu mudah lupa, actually many melayu did not forget easily. Despite all the media blockout of this issue…. melayu tidak lupa. That is why my 70 years old mother who lives in Taiping voted DAP for the very first time this time around- because she didn’t forget. She remembers….
    Tetapi Hanya Allah yang boleh membalas jasa Guan Eng kepada negara.

  33. Yee Lai Lin Says:

    DEDICATED TO YAB LIM GUAN ENG & ALL THOSE WHO HAD SUFFERED:-

    A Word of Thanks
    For All Your Pain
    May you be well in Every way;
    Empathize the Rakyat had Done;
    By Voting Pakatan Rakyat all the Way!

    Fret Not about the Past;
    Move on with the Future;
    Show them the difference;
    Humanity still exists in Malaysia;

    Continue to protect the People;
    Of Every Race & Gender;
    Let us All be Proud to be called;
    Malaysians of the true Nature.

    Congratulations YAB Lim; Daddy & All in PR;
    After the Sufferings Let the Light Shower;
    Let’s take the Road Less Traveled;
    That we can Succeed in OUR FUTURE!

  34. David Low Says:

    Thanks Saudara Wong to let us know about this. I feel so sorry for YAB Lim and this is why I told mysef by hook or by crook I need to fulfill my responsibility as a citizen of Malaysia to come back and make a vote. This is infact the most simple thing that being a citizen of Malaysia needs to do.

    I feel sad when most of my friends refuse to vote although quite a numbers of them I have seen are willing to take part in the election compare to last time.

    I am deeply saddened by the fact when they told me one vote couldn’t change anything. When there is no 1 vote, there is no millions of votes. Every vote counts. When thing happens, they will always find someone to help them and they will even make complain of something something which is not done right. But then in the end, what did they contribute? It was just a single vote and with a little time and effort to give 2x crosses on the party he wants to vote on and of course we just encouraged him to place his vote and whichever party he decided to vote is definitely his rights and we don’t influence him, not at all.

    So it is sad when i really hear that YAB Lim endures this pain. I am feeling the pain and to be frankly, I do feel of crying and not only YAB Lim but alot of them like Uncle Lim (Kit Siang), Raja Petra and alot more.

    But as a citizen of Malaysia, we love the country very much and we would love to progress together with the country. May God bless us Malaysians.

  35. Desmond Says:

    I m so happy for LGE today. I confessed that I have never voted DAP all my life. Somehow fate seem to intervene and I ended up voting BN each time. But I can proudly tell him I voted rocket 1st time this 12th GE! Its a vote for YB Hannah (ADUN SJ) and YB Gwo Burne (MP Kelana Jaya).

    Wanna know what prompted me to vote differently this time? Finally I woke up from my dream the day Kerishamuddin waved the keris! Being faithfully voting BN all the time and this is what I get??? Loyalty dont pay?? What have we done to deserve all this?? I told myself I shall return that “favour’ in the next GE! ‘By god grace, ‘favour’ was indeed returned on 8th March 2008.

    Everyone seems to be asking what in the world is MCA and Gerakan doing? UMNO, Gerakan and MCA are coalition partners. Why are they not communicating with each other? Why allow one of your brother to spit at you and you end up doing nothing? Everyone of us just shakes our heads and our heads lowered, humiliated and confused. Where are we heading? Subsequently decisions have been decided in 2006 on who to vote for! In fact, no one talks in my family, including my own cousins and everyone else we associate with.

    Let me tell a peculiar thing, sort of an irony. My mom a staunch opposition supporter all this while, having sensed our family i.e. my siblings, uncles, aunties, cousins, perceived swing in the opposite direction this time, pleaded with us not to vote opposition this time. I think she somehow has the 6th sense that a Tsunami was on the way heading BN. She was afraid that MCA and Gerakan would be badly bruised and therefore chinese in malaysia may end up being marginalised further as their representation weakens in govt.

    My hometown is in Ipoh, Perak. But I changed my constituency to SJ since I moved to SJ in early 1992. My mom still live in Ipoh, well err, sometimes. She travels up and down whenever she’s like. So, a week before election, she was in SJ and she wanted to travel back to Ipoh to vote. As fate would have it, all tickets from KL to Ipoh were sold out. My sister drove up to Puchong all the way from Ipoh just a few days before the election, she offered my mom a ride back in her car. I told her of her ‘choice’ this time around. She was shocked and refused her a ride. My cousin brother too denied her a ride back, again knowing her ‘choice’. In the end she couldnt vote for the 1st time in her life. Luckily she did not grumble as she knew it wasnt economical for me to drive her all the way back to my hoetown just for her 1 vote. It was strange that everyone seems to be rejoicing knowing well that she did not get to vote this time!

    After 8th March 2008, its really a new dawn for all of us, not only for DAP, PKR and PAS.

    let mahatir never forget this. he was instrumental in sending guan eng to jail just to protect a child rapist who happened to be his strong supporter. let him not forget this episode and forever etched in his mind what he has done to an innocent man. a question to you, mahatir. what if this man is your son? how would you feel about the travesty of justice? what about the young girl’s future? mahatir, please live long enough to see the results of your many evil deeds which are now coming back to haunt the country.

  37. Mrs. Chai Says:

    Thank you for this touching story. I am not a Penangite but I am very proud to know that Mr. LGE is the CM of Penang. An ordinary and humble malaysian that is Lim Guan Eng. May god bless LGE and his family!

  38. J. D. Lovrenciear Says:

    Dear Sir,

    This episode that you have related is heart rending. Why must a man who stood in defence of justice and honor be put to shame?

    Worst, why is no one lifting a finger to bring to book those recalcitrant cowards who had a finger in putting this man behind bars?

    Yes, LGE has been given the mandate by the populace to return to where he rightfully belongs today as the Chief Minister. But justice must be still delivered.

    I appeal to all learned lawyers to re-visit this case and bring to book all those who had a role in the cruel imprisonment of LGE.

    To YB Lim GE,

    If you are reading this, please know that my friends and I will always pray that God will protect you and have abundant mercy on you. May your dreams of making life better for the poor and oftentime forgotten Malaysians be a step nearer to reality with each passing day. Yours is a story worth mentioning for a long time to come.
    Lastly, do not be disheartened if the task ahead of you seems insurmountable for if God is for you who can be against you.

  40. Philip Hii Says:

    It is indeed a touching story.Political struggle usuallly takes a long and difficult time to achieve its intended goals. We certainly need more great leaders like YAB Lim Guan Eng who persevere and is not afraid of making sacrifices. DAP has 30 years’ history in Sarawak, but it looks like it still has a long way to go in achieving its ultimate goal of governing Sarawak. I have some old photos to share at www.rubberseeds.blogspot.com on Lim Kit Siang’s first visit to Sibu, Sarawak.

  41. yuhwa Says:

    Extremely touching revelations on how LKS, LGE and their families stood by their believes and principles for justice. They had certainly suffered and endured much for the sake of Malaysians. Surely they will be rewarded in ways not known to us.
    We will standby you and wish the patriachs of DAP well in these times of change.

  42. LoveMalaysiaRakyat Says:

    I have visited Pudu jail before doing some work amongst the women and visiting the imprisoned. I never quite get over the “prison” imagery and it has put in my mind that it is not the place to put humanity.
    There are other ways to rehabilitate, to renew, to whatever, but not prison.
    I empathise with Kit Siang and his son for the pain they went through. I believe they are genuine people who want to see a truly just Malaysia. There are others too, Malays, Indians who also want a fair and just Malaysia. We want these to lead us. Those who want to be great, must learn to be a servant, not a robber, a thief, an accuser and liars just like the BN front, UMNO, MCA and Gerakan alike. Worst of all is MIC Samy.

    Politicians serve not rape the nation.
    By the way, FOLKS, there are still many that are in the lock-up - our Hindraf boys. They are also squatting in rows - can you picture them?

  43. Moses Kumar Says:

    Wow, i thot i have seen and heard everything, this true life experience, i just can’t believe. But one thing for sure, the God that we believe is just n fair with Love and Compassion. Mr Guan Eng suffer and his dad had to go thru that difficult time, but the people’s prayer was answered. Injustice done only makes a person stronger. Mr Guan Eng, u don’t need a Datuk or a Tan Sri , u stay just the way you are, the people are with u. God will bless you, ur family and I am very sure, U have made ur Dad, Mr Kit Siang proud. The people who put u thru a hard time , just forgive them.

  44. KENNY YEAP Says:

    My heart cried out for you. Forgive and forget those that did this to you. God is with you and if God is with you, who can be against you. Your family must be really proud of you especially your mon and dad. Move on…..

  45. anonymous Says:

    i still heard from others that this ‘guy’ still bring some underaged for some……at one of his condo. but sadly, no one even dare to voice out….

  46. ferrari Says:

    Dear Lim Guan Eng, WE are NOT asking you to be revengeful.

    Just to get the record straight.

    Put the Rapist to Jail.

    Also the person responsible for your time in Jail is Mahathir aka the Father of Corruption.

    Put Mahathir in Jail.

  47. WW Says:

    A million thanks to Mr. Lim Guan Eng for being the CM of Malaysia. I am from Penang and I am so proud of you. Please do you utmost best to make Penang the “Pearl of the Orient ” again. I had always dreamed to retire in Penang but the property prices have been ridiculously high: even higher than some in KL where I now live. Trust with your government, property prices would stabilize for the good of all Penangites. All the best.

    Every man/women need to go thru obstacle in life to grow up. Some will have harder obstacle. It is these obstacles that make a person wiser as he/she grows old.

    A person that did not go thru obstacle will never grow up.

    In this material world, people who hold the power in his hand had misused the power. This person would think I am the most powerful person. Remember there is God, he is watching.

    By going thru this experience, LGE will be stronger mentally as a CM and on the opposition, there will be a lot of hurdles to cross.

    May God bless LGE and all Malaysian that want a country free from corruption.

    may i have the permission to reproduce this article in my blog, so that i can share this story with my friends?

  52. Johari Hashim Says:

    Thanks for sharing with us the suffering LGE has gone through. My family and I would like to wish him all the best and move forward now by making the Penangites proud of themselves. He has stood up for the poor Malay girl and did not deserve the humiliation at all!

    Just goes to show ONE of the million cruel things that Mahathir has committed during his 22 years reign - only to be matched by the likes of Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Pinochet! After causing so much misery to his foes, and suppressing the progress of certain segment of societies, abusing civil liberty of rights group, … - it needn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why he suddenly wanted Abdullah out. I think there are lots of things Abdullah will be revealing about the 22 years of bad things that Mahathir has committed. In order to avoid bearing such embarrassment, he has to trigger something to rock the boat!

    Look everyone, the kind of sentiment he is drumming now for the Umnoputras to go against Abdullah - he has done it before in the 1960s and now, he is doing it again. The country could be bracing for another round of anarchy if we let him do it again… More so now too, with Abdullah giving face to Opposition, who knows someday the ISA and OSA may be repealed and only God knows what flowery, colourful and creative way to be money making machines as cronies.

    Also, how come the Police and the Home Minister allowed the Singgahsana gathering on Tuesday and NO arrest has been made, given the similar behavior by Hindraf 5 were greeted with Kamunting invitation.

    May is a just few weeks away - be careful - Mahathir’s motive is unknown to majority of us, and he may be planning to destroy our peaceful and harmonious country, like how it was done by him, Harun and Razak in ‘69. Only thing is he will do it himself this time and then join Harun and Razak, perhaps, doing the same thing in Hell! There is lots of undercurrent flowing…

    Let’s pray to the Almighty, for the well being of the nation and people.

    I have the utmost respect for Mr. Lim Kit Siang and Mr. Lim Guan Eng for the path they have taken all these years to make this country truly belong to everyone born here. It can’t be wrong to have our new Chief Minister in Penang and all other good men and women to lead us forward in our quest for a better Malaysia we owe it ALL OUR MALAYSIAN children and theirs to come.
    And Mr. Wong, thank you for sharing this story. Mr. Lim Senior is no different from any father who pains for his son’s sufferings. After having read through this story, I will also see Mr. Lim Senior in a different light - as a father. I am sure lots of us out here empathize with the father and son and their families for all they have gone through.
    God bless them…., and God bless a truly democratic and liberal Malaysia that is beginning to dawn on the horizon - a country of our own where every self-respecting citizen is allowed walking tall.

    Dear Dr Mahathir…. I sincerely hope you read this.

    You let thambik cik free although he raped a 15 yo girl. That is politics. But why were so inhuman sending LGE to jail. You could have avoided that. You are smart leader but Inside you there is evil. Honestly …dont forget… you yoursef should be in jail for so many wrong doings…but you are not..live with that.

  58. Wong Ho Leng Says:

    Sheon, yes, you can share this truth with anybody.

    Philip Hii, I can’t reach your email. You have a wonderful captivating collection of photos. May I have permission to use the 2 photos of LKS in your collection? If you have any more photo of DAP, especially those taken in its early infancy days, I shall be obliged if you can let me use them too. I am preparing a special magazine of 30 yrs anniversary of DAP in Swk. Thanks

  59. Rick W. Says:

    Dear YAB LGE,

    As I read this, my tears were rolling down. I don’t understand what profit does one gets to defend the evil doers and send the good to prison???

    I thought it has been taught in all religions that we need to do good and avoid evil???

    Remember! we all have to die one day and probably some live for a longer time so that they have enough time to repent before they say goodbye.

    I strongly believe that what goes around comes around. What you sow is what you reap. Therefore, I wish to conclude this with the following quotation:

    “You can have everything in life you want
    if you will just help enough other people
    get what they want.” - Zig Ziglar

  60. Ex-Malayan Says:

    There have been many incidents where DAP MPs have been humiliated by Govt officials because they think they have the right to do so. Some DAP MPs charged in court, out on bail, were routinely handcuffed at the end of the day and taken to the “office” so that their bail could be extended. I have no doubt that most of those involved were UMNO members. It is the moral strength of the DAP members that they have not allowed themselves to be embittered for the lousy (and unnecassary) behaviour of such retards. LKS, Karpal and others also suffered unfair detention without trial for merely standing up for the rights of ALL Malaysians. I am not in their mould and I left the land of my birth forever. In a foreign land, I have citizenship, equal rights and respect but I miss my friends and ex-countrymen. My loyalty is to my new homeland but I have residula affection for the land of my birth because of its people including those in the DAP.

  61. Philip Hii Says:

    YB WHL, certainly you can use those 2 photos. I will burn them and some others in a CD for you when I return from travelling, probably at the end of April.

  62. napala turki Says:

    It really touches my heart, not concerned the race, but the suffer he gain in the prison has taught him to be a good YAB, God has choosen him to lead Penang, and the first signed of success is when he declined repairng the CM permises.

    YAB LGE, keepup your spirit of Justice, you will never failed to get more support in coming future.

  63. Wong Ho Leng Says:

    Philip, Thanks, I shall wait for your CD. My Party did keep photos but almost all of them were lost when we moved Party office over the years. I now believe in keeping photos. They tell a bit of history more than words.

    To all surfers of this humble blog, I wish to say this. I am glad that this post on Guan Eng has generated so much response and interest. It only shows the innocence of a man who was convicted and wronged.

    I had time and time again imagined being able to paint a picture of Guan Eng squatting together with other inmates in the warden’s office, with his hands clasped behind his head, a familiar face with an unfamiliar crew cut, an unfamiliar prison uniform on the wrong person, with no name or identity anymore but just a number. These things that I saw, humiliating a person to the pit. I tried imagine the split second that his eyes and mine met but I pretended not having seen him. I tried imagine his feelings that even I, his comrade, had betrayed him in his desperate state of humiliation. Gosh. If a picture is taken of what I thought …. That picture will speak a lot…

  64. goldart Says:

    Everyone knew that the present Penang CM went to jail for a good cause and now the people of Penang is rewarding him with a mandate to rid the Island of UMNO led BN Dirts.For DAP to enter Sarawak,DAP must first of all get rid of TAIB and his cronies through Pekatan Rakyat during the parliamentary sitting. PR must not waiver in their condemnation of the corrupt Sarawak state government under Taib.Find ways and means to reach out to the people in the rural areas of Sarawak ,because they are still ignorant of the fact that their special rights,customary rights,properties and the wealth of the land of the hornbill has almost disappeared.Who in Sarawak ,is willing to undergo what YB.LGE.experienced in Kajang Prison?

  65. vraman padmanabhan Says:

    Dear Sir,
    I was really touched by this true story and the tears were freely flowing. I just couldn’t imagine someone going to jail in defence of a poor girl especially from another race. YAB LGE is a great man & that is why God has given him this opportunity to serve the people. Consider everybody equally and serve their needs. In returns your goodself will receive lots & lots of blessings which is very, very important for one’s well being. Do not be like Mahathir who has caused so much sorrow to so many and have to live see the returns. I had doubts over LKS’s intentions (LIM Dynasty) but now understand he has created a great man in YAB LGE. Good work Mr LKS. You must be really proud of son YAB LGE. Congrajulations!!!! Keep it up.

  67. Denzel Says:

    Natural justice shall prevail. Today, LGE and TDM are in roles reversed:
    LGE is a proud state leader; TDM is stateless.
    LGE is praised by one and all; TDM is cursed.
    LGE is young and full of spirits; TDM is old and a ghost of his former self.
    LGE is almost a glass full, TDM is almost MT.
    Long live LGE! Don’t think TDM wants to live that long :)

  68. cksheng74 Says:

    I do hope that YAB Lim Guan Eng would pen down his experiences in an autobiography (together with a compilation of articles and sharings such as this piece by others who had had experiences of direct contact with him). This would leave a good legacy behind to the next generations — the sufferings he has endured, the good he has defended.

    Salam everyone
    There is a saying by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). “Whoever hurt a non-muslim (dealing with unjust) hurts me”. The former chief minister (Malacca) should ask forgiveness from YB Lim, so does the girl who were so ungrateful when she denied all the allegations heaped on the minister - thus freeing him from the charges, which even shocked her grandmother who had confided with YB Lim in this tragic case.
